For the first time ever, athletes and enthusiasts are descending on Lake Hernando in Citrus County, Florida to participate in the first ever Lake Hernando Dragon Boat Festival. This ancient sport draws interest from professional paddlers and amateurs alike. Such festivals are often held in Florida in late fall or early spring. You can look forward to a fun and exciting Lake Hernando Dragon Boat Festival on November the 16th, 2013 and again on March 15th, 2014.
A rapidly growing sport, Dragon Boat paddling races have been around for over 2,000 years. Dragon Boats originated in China somewhere around 220 B.C. Today, over 2 million athletes participate in this sport around the globe. Dragon boats are elegant and graceful vessels, colored brightly with the likeness of a dragon as a figure head. Twenty paddlers and one drummer comprise a team, moving in time to a drum beat.
Many of the contestants in this festival will represent teams from local businesses, churches, and civic organizations. The festival is free to spectators and there will be beer wine and food available to attendees. Much of the proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Project. The event is being hosted by the Grandmasters Dragon Boat Club of The Villages and the Nature Coast Dragon Boat Club of Homosassa.
